Husbands! Smack your wife across the mouth!

she said that husbands are the head of the family, and if the wife doesn't support him in serving jehovah then he should give her a good smack across the mouth, thats what she deserves.
if only adam had given eve a good smack across the mouth when she proposed eating the fruit, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now!

My first introduction to Domestic Violence was when I got involved with the JWs - quite an experience for a seventeen year old!
In this particular case, an elder's advice to the husband was, to quote "That he should clobber her."
Unfortunately, I believed the BS that this same elder offered i.e. that the wife in this case was "new in the truth" and that she "got her hours in" - so this couple were all-right to "associate" with:
- Whereas my own parents, who did not "go to meetings" were not!
That the problem is widespread in JW land was borne out by a physcho-therapist friend a few years ago. She said that many of her clients were JWs - and that the abuse of women was very common amongst these.
When I think that the WTS brought out a book in the late 1970s called "Making your Family Life Happy" - as if they would know the first thing about that!

The law is an ass - whatever the animal that runs the country.
Where I come from, one of the severest penalties on the statute books is the one you cop if you have the effrontery to mill a native tree into timber.
Yet you can bash another person over the head with a baseball bat - half kill them - and get off with a $300 fine and told not to be naughty next time! (Actually happened to someone I used to work with).
Yet look out if you saw a native tree up into timber - whether you own it or not.

Watchtower Gives Up Explaining 607 BCE Date!
by VM44 inthis is a very important observation, that the watchtower has not tried to explain in print why 607 bce is the year for the destruction of jerusalem for the last 17 years!!!.
all that the watchtower has done over most of the last two decades is to repeat over and over the year "607bce" in its publications as if it is an unquestioned fact!.
the last time an explaination for the year was attempted by the watchtower was in 1988 when the "insight" volumes were published, but since then, no explaination for the validity of the year has appeared in print.. this must mean something, but what?

I had of course read of that court case before, but could not recall the exact details.
For those on this board, and who are interested, it would be possible to access the actual court records of that case - "The Persuers Proof - Walsh vs. the State" from memory.
While still (trying to be) a loyal Dubbie, I had that flung at me one day while engaging in the "Field Service". There is no denying the obvious, and for me, that was about the final nail in the coffin of swallowing yet more WTS bull~<#t.

Regarding your remarks about "celebrated WTS Scholars":
- That is just the trouble; there is no scholarship amongst that lot!
It begins with the principal of the New World Translation Committee (Frederick Franz) - who could not speak Hebrew, and whom only ever had a very brief tuition in Biblical (Koine) Greek - and it goes on from there.
Which WTS "scholars" do you have in mind, and what are they "celebrated" for?
About the only achievement that the WTS could be credited with is running an excellent book publishing empire.
As for being accomplished bible scholars, though - I once believed that (bloody fool!) - but it proved to be one more of the cruel illusions the WTS had us believing.

SHOULD I PIONEER OR COLLEGE?

i am 21 and i remember just 4 years ago going to college was looked at as something negative.
girls my age, we had plans to be ft pioneers and become secretaries.

You won't find too many serious posters here who would advise you to pioneer rather than go to college.
Go to college now while you have the chance to do so:
(i) This opportunity may never present itself again.
(ii) It is almost impossible to get a decent job without a university degree.
Points (i) and (ii) have already been learned the hard way by all too many of us:
- There would have to be literally millions of people around (both inside and outside of the "Truth") who have been hurt by the WTS bull<#$t about "the time left is short", "college will harm your faith", "the only way to have a satisfying life is to pioneer" ect. ect. ect. (or words to that effect).
- Bear in mind, too, that pioneering is not for everyone ; even not for most people, as witness the high drop-out rate of those entering the "Full Time Service."
At the end of the day, who is going to provide for you?
- The WTS sure as anything you like is not going to!
- You surely do not have to be a Rocket Scientist / Brain Surgeon ect. to figure out that you are entirely on your own when it comes to that.
(As Stevenson, in his 1967 book "1975 - Year of Doom" stated - ' No other religious group demands so much from its members, while in return giving so little back.')
No doubt you have been "assured" that Jehovah provides."
That one is a bit like the Dervishes in the Sudan:
-Their leader (The Mahdi) assured them that "their faith would make them bullet proof." However, if they did get themselves shot, "it was their own fault for not having enough faith."
Don't try to re-invent the wheel on this matter - learn from those of us who have already been hurt by the WTS lies and stupidity.
(Remember, stupidity has been described as "doing the same thing over and over again, while at the same time expecting different results to happen.")
My thoughts anyway, writing from the remote depths of a Third World country :
- where I am currently working; because without a degree, it is almost impossible to get a decent job in a developed country.

In those years, I desparately wanted to "do the right thing" and consequently followed the WTS party line:
- Which is why I am working where I am now, somewhere "the other side of the black stump" - because without a university degree, you cannot get a decent job anywhere that is civilised !

when you read all the stories on this forum about other people's experience, does your anger resurface?.

I am still bitter towards the WTS, despite it being eleven years now since I broke with them.
At times, though, I surprise myself with how trusting I still am towards JWs. Just today, the local Kingdom Hall approached the Power Supply Company where I work, arranging to get some new wiring inpected and connected. Such was my confidence in the the WTS to do things strictly by the law, that I did not even question that the work had been performed by properly licensed tradesmen.
(Usually, I would mount a mini-Spanish Inquisition!)
But no, I think I will resent forever the Watchtower Society as a mind control cult - for the harm it inflicted on me, and the harm that it continues to inflict on others.
